Clear Invisalign dental aligners can straighten your smile

Invisalign

One of the most common dental issues that patients come to us with at Smokerise Dental is crooked, misaligned teeth. Traditional braces were the most recommended way to resolve this issue for many years. However, in the late 1990s, a new option hit the market: Invisalign.

Invisalign is a series of clear aligners that use a technology known as “SmartTrack” to shift teeth into their proper position. Since the aligners are clear, they are almost invisible, which means most people won’t even notice them- unlike the obvious brackets and wires of traditional braces.

Since it was introduced, Invisalign has surged in popularity and has become one of the best ways to treat malocclusions, such as bad bite, overcrowded teeth, gapped teeth, crossbite, overbite, and underbite.

Advantages of Invisalign over Traditional Braces

There are several advantages of Invisalign over traditional braces. Some of these include:

Easy to clean

Traditional braces are difficult to maintain. When you’re eating, food can get stuck in the brackets and wires. Invisalign aligners are designed to be removed while you are eating, so you don’t have to worry about food particles getting stuck and ruining your smile. Simply brush your teeth after you eat/drink and rinse the aligners before putting them back in.

Requires fewer dental visits

Patients with traditional braces must come every couple of weeks so that we can check progress and tighten the wires and rubber bands. Invisalign, on the other hand, allows you to maintain your current lifestyle, as you only need to come in every 4 to 6 weeks for us to monitor your progress. At the beginning of your treatment, you will be given the aligners for the current and next several phases of treatment. You change them out every 1 to 3 weeks, based on your treatment plan.

No food restrictions

Since the aligners are designed to be removed while you are eating, you don’t have to restrict your food choices. This reduces the risk of damage to your aligners as well as the time it takes to clean your teeth after eating.

Better aesthetics

Many patients, especially older teens and adults, prefer not to stand out from their friends and acquaintances. Invisalign allows you to resolve your malocclusion discreetly.

More comfortable

Traditional braces can be uncomfortable because the brackets and wires are putting tension on your teeth to pull them into place. Also, the brackets and wires may also scrape your cheeks, lips, and tongue causing mouth sores. However, your teeth get to rest when you remove your aligners for eating and since the aligners are smooth, you don’t have to worry about scraping your soft mouth tissues.

Safe for all ages

Invisalign is a safe, suitable treatment for all ages. However, we do recommend that you wait until your child is 13 or older to straighten their teeth with Invisalign. This is because they may still have primary teeth and their jaws are still developing. Also, Invisalign requires a certain level of compliance and responsibility that most young children do not have.

Resolves malocclusions

Invisalign is appropriate for resolving a variety of dental malocclusions, including bad bite, overcrowded teeth, gapped teeth, crossbite, overbite, and underbite. If you have a skeletal malocclusion, you may need to consider other options such as traditional braces or surgical intervention.

How does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign clear aligners are made of a transparent, biocompatible plastic known as “SmartTrack”. They put gentle pressure on your teeth, gradually shifting them into their appropriate position within your jaw. They may be removed for eating and drinking or brushing and flossing your teeth. However, for best results, the aligners must be on your teeth for at least 20 to 22 hours a day.

As long as you wear the aligners as instructed, treatment should only take 12 to 18 months. Some patients see results within the first 6 months and others may take slightly longer, depending on the severity of their malocclusion and their compliance with wearing the aligners.

At the end of treatment, just like with traditional braces, you will be given a retainer to wear. This will help to keep your teeth in their new position until the jawbone heals and can hold them in place. You will be instructed to wear the retainer at all times to start with, but eventually you will be able to wear it only at night.

Invisalign Teen

Invisalign Teen works exactly like traditional Invisalign. The primary difference is that Invisalign Teen aligners have a series of blue dots. Over time, as long as the aligners are being worn as directed, the dots will fade. While this is not fail-safe, it does give parents peace of mind that they can monitor their teen’s compliance and help ensure that they wear their aligners.

Invisalign, A Modern Orthodontic Approach

When you visit Dr. Moeti for your Invisalign case, we will perform an in-depth examination of your bite and teeth using high-tech digital pictures taken with an intraoral camera. These digital impressions and pictures are used to create your custom-made Invisalign aligners. A series of aligners will be created that slowly adjust the position of your teeth over time. You will be required to wear them for 20-22 hours a day and will switch them out for a new, adjusted pair every week or two depending on your needs. As long as you stay compliant, you will start seeing results within six months. This is why many Invisalign patients experience a shorter treatment time than with traditional orthodontics.
